This was posted by david h on kams form. He did his homework For those of you thinking about whether to get a 125cc 2stroke, or a 250 4stroke do your research before jumping on the bandwagon. I would suggest you don't let your ego lead you head first into being a spectator, watching from the sidelines. Spend your hard earned $ wisely, and come race with us...
Buy NEW when you can because the transmission and clutch parts aren't cheap either...The following is an approximate cost meant to be informative only.
STOCK 125cc 2stroke: approx cost for parts without labor:
a.) OEM replacement crankshafts: $209.95 - 211.24 (flywheel, connecting rod and bearings/seal kits)
b.) piton kits: $120.00 - $135.00 (piston, ring, wrist pin and circlips)
c.) top end gasket kit: $23.31 - $47.53 (o-rings, base gasket, etc)
d.) labor:
To rebuild a stock 2stroke is easier than rebuilding an Intek or Animal. The only other item that has to addressed is the cylinder. I'm not sure what it cost to have a cylinder recoated. I used the same gaskets when I replaced the ring, and then reused them again when I replaced the piston in my YZ125...no leaks and it runs so so.
STOCK 250 4stroke: approx cost for parts without labor:
a.) OEM replacement crankshaft: $274.95
b.) camshaft(s): 199.95 - $295.95(Dual cam engine. Intake and exhaust cams sold seperately)
c.) valve spring kit: $169.95 - $199.95
d.) 7.48 complete valve shim kit: $89.95 (two boxes include 1.20 - 3.50mm in .05 incrememnts w/3 shims in ea. size)
e.) cylinder kit: standard bore: $539.95
f.) piston kits: $190.00 - $220.00
g.) steel valves: $28.18 (exhaust)
h.) titanium valves: $169.74 - $192.15 (exhaust) $169.74 - $176.14 (intake)
j.) cam chain: $72.36 - $76.85
k.) gasket kit: $70.00
l.) LABOR: its not CHEAP, even to adjust the valves costs a few $$$
